Today marks the 100th birthday of Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins, or Mr Collins as I’d like to call him, because I believe that’s how you’re supposed to address someone who you respect a lot. If you have no idea who I’m talking about here, get out. I’m kidding, you can read a little about him here (everyone still loves a good Wiki, right?) and here (Shanghai Kate rocks!). With this being Mr Collins’ 100th birthday, I think today is a very special day for tattooists and collectors alike. I also think we have a lot to be grateful for that he gave us while he was alive- thinks like his needle configurations, power systems and colour pigments are still used today, and his creativity and originality inspire artists constantly! Jerry also fought out against “scab vendors”, which I guess is what we’d call “scratchers” today. He was a smart, classy and respected guy, and I really hope that people are still inspired by him in another 100 years.
Happy birthday, Mr Collins.
