TedEd: What Makes Tattoos Permanent?

TedEd is an absolutely fantastic place to learn about pretty much anything. If you’ve got a question, you can put a safe bet on TED having the answer. In fact, not only will they know the answer, but they’ll be able to put it in a video that’s easy for any of us idiots to understand. Recently, they’ve posted up a video that explained something others have been trying to put into words for years: what makes tattoos permanent?

For a long time, it’s been common knowledge that tattoos aren’t shed from the skin, like cells in the epidermis are, since the ink is deposited in the dermis. However, I think that for a lot of people, that’s where their knowledge stops. This video goes on to explain what happens to make the tattoo permanent, why a layer peels off when healing, and why tattoos fade. It’s done in such a great way, and I think anyone would be interested in this.
